Why I started this trip?

Mental health is a core part of psychological wellbeing, and hence everyday life, and is as important as physical health. The two issues are interlinked; poor physical health may increase the likelihood of developing poor mental health, and poor mental health may increase risks of developing or not recovering from serious physical health problems. Whilst good mental health is a key factor in successful psychological and social functioning, poor mental health has been associated with poor socio-economic status, poor education and poor opportunities for employment, and a host of inequalities.

I myself had gone through low points of my life when my mental health was challenged and put to the test. It fell apart. Not only it had affected me emotionally, physically but it also manifested in my work performance and social life.

The reason why I started this ride is that I recognise that everyone is vulnerable to mental health issues and in my case, depression. It doesn’t matter what your gender, profession, age, culture and background. We are all susceptible to depression. However I believe that we can be empowered to move on, conquer and look beyond our strife that affected us and move into the process of recovery, reconnecting and rediscovering a brand new beginning.

I plan to do this by riding across the country from Perth to Sydney in 40 plus days. Everyday I will update you(the reader) on my journey; the places I’ve been, the people I encounter and other adventures that might happen along the way. This journey will also symbolize as a brand new beginning for me.

I believe there are people out there that needs help and support to enable them to recover from mental health issues. Minds is one such organization in Australia that commits their resources to help, support and manage people with mental health problems.

In preparation of this trip I have sold away my car and replaced it with a road bike. And since 3 months ago, I have been consistently cycling everyday. Till date I’ve already covered nearly 2000km on my bike. Your support for my ride would not only encourage me but also help Minds to help others going through depression. So please do donate. Thank you!

Latest Updates – After 55 days of Cycling, I have decided to end my bike trip in Melbourne. I am still continuing my updates on this page but as you might have realised, after entering into Victoria I have not updated my posts that often. I apologise for that as the trip has really took quite a physical strain on me and it has took me a full week in Melbourne to finally get my body back in order. I’ll continue to update this blog from where I left off. I thank you all for your following again..be sure to check back in for more updates and sharings of my trip across Australia.

Warmest regards,
Joe~ the Journeyman cyclist
